Summer, a note mostly about fruit flies.

I don't even know what happened to the summer. I do know that I love physics though. If it didn't involve so much calculus (which I... ugh. know nothing of) I would be more enthralled by it. Mas tudo bem né?
I was told today that the energy in the sun is created by hydrogen atoms smashing into other hydrogen atoms to form helium atoms (BAM). That's all good and all. You know. And somehow plants use this energy to form sugar usable by cells. Blows my mind.
I'm not an extemely clean person. And I think the hoards of insects in my apartment might be a sure sign of this. But mi casa es su casa right? This weekend is only going to involve packing up and cleaning. I'm so sick of my belongings being so transient. I would like to only have like 2 boxes worth of belongings. But that's impossible. I am excited to explore western europe with a backpack. Also excited about fall quarter. I have little to say. This always happens when I sit down to write in this blog. I finally got around to fixing my beautiful bike. So that's being used. Europe in a couple days. Math final tomorrow. Boxes. Fruit flies. tudo isso né?

bom.

Homeless

The quarter has ended. I am not profound.

Thanks to not being in school right now, my ability to think has diminished significantly. I can't process any coherant thoughts at all. People keep telling me that this is good. It's good to take a break. Well yes. But my breaks are not condusive to productivity. Are we actually being productive in college? I mean, yes, we're learning, yes. But I really don't know what to do with my friday night.

I moved boxes around.

Today I asked myself a question: what is beauty?

I was at a cafe today. Waiting for a band to play with my friend johnny. There was this woman playing. She was middle aged. High on mushrooms. And her band was not very well coordinated. She was happy though. We were not. It was bad music. But she was happy. And I knew that she felt that her actions were beautiful. And we all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So a construct then. A construct of humans.

Everything is a construct. Everything beyond nature. And I think that is where humans have become unnatural. We make things up. Romance, politics, television, pop music, magazines, diapers, clothes, the trees you see on the side of the road, philosophy, everything is a fucking construct.

I want to go to iceland.

I'm done with covering up reality with fake things. Open your eyes. Look out your window.

Reality has become extinct. We will never know it.

Lazy Week

Not really. But I managed to sleep through spanish yesterday, and plant bio today. Plus, my ankles a little weak so I didn't dance at all this week (skipped on tuesday, left early on thursday). Spanish was cancelled today. Oh, and I skipped choir yesterday.

But don't worry, it's all within rationality.

uhhhh

BUT! On the flip side, I did take 2 midterms and write a damn good spanish paper.

Anyway, the flower here is from the passion family (passifloraceae), you know como Parcha. Look at it's reproductive structures! Holy cow! This flower seriously blows my mind more than most things. FIRST of all LOOK at it's stamens. HUGE green spotted stamens. Giant pistils. And then I thik the squiggly things are modified petals and then the things that look like petals underneath then are actually modified sepals. I don't know though.

I want to learn German. and Portuguese.

My spanish is improving.

I love the UW, there's free tutoring every night at Mary Gates Hall. All the tutors are undergrads so whether or not its helpful is dependant on the subject and the intellegence of the tutors available. but they have tables set up for different subjects, and I went to the spanish tutors table (mostly for fun) to see if they wanted to read my essay and make any corrections. Turns out argentinians are hard to understand and they have a weird 2nd person verb form (vos?) . but yea.

I went to an undergraduate biology department BBQ yesterday and mingled with biology majors. We mostly talked about mitosis. You know. Like you do. And ate vegan hamburgers. And chips. It was kind of like going to a rich and fancy party with celebreties. But instead of famous people you'll see well known professors and you'll whisper to the person next to you and say "look! there's doctor suchandsuch. I've heard her marine invertabrete class is incredible."

It's all very exclusive you know.

or something.

anyway, back to books.

I'd rise superior to my pain

Damnit. Another sprained ankle.

Spring quarter marches ahead. With no breaks. I've been randomly collapsing from severe exaustion. Every day is wake up go to class/work study study study go to study group go to class go to choir study study drink caffeine recopy biology notes go to the library study

and yet I still fear graduating without knowing anything.

Wednesday we learned about Oleaceae (the olive family). Look at the name of this blog! and you'll see why I'm excited. I actually don't remember anything about the olive family from lecture. Their fruits taste good though.

The next 3 quarters of school are going to blow my mind.

and now, for an old southern hymn:
   Sweet rivers of redeeming love,
Lie just before mine eyes,
Had I the pinions of a dove,
I'd to those rivers fly;
I'd rise superior to my pain,
With joy outstrip the wind;
I'd cross o'er Jordan's stormy waves,
And leave the world behind.

Declaration

Tomorrow. At around 10:50am. I will be going to Mary Gates Hall. I will pick up a copy of my unofficial transcript and march to Hitchcock and present them with it. And I will officially declare Plant Biology as my major.

It's going to be a big day.

I also have my first Plant ID midterm. So yikes.
